Why/when used?

Close-up

Close-ups are obviously useful for showing detail and emphasizing facial features and can also be used as a cut-in

Mid-shot

The mid shot shows some part of the subject in more detail, whilst still showing enough for the audience to feel as if they were looking at the whole subject

Wide-shot

The subject takes up the full frame

Extreme close up

Show extreme detail

Cut away

Shot of something other than the subject

Two-shot

Shot of two people, framed similarly

Over the should shot

Looking from behind a person at the subject
